The Neill Advanced Sailing Clinic exists to provide accomplished youth sailors with high quality sailing instruction by top collegiate coaches.
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE CLINIC?
Intense, on-the-water coaching interspersed with personal debrief sessions. Classroom lectures, on-the-water drills including tactics, strategy, sail trim, and boat speed. Coaches utilize video footage, chalk talks, land demos and on-the-water exercises. The coach to boat ratio is low with one coach for four to six boats and each attendee has the opportunity to work with all of our coaches.
HOUSING AND MEALS
Sailors coming from out of the area will be housed with local clinic sailors or other Chicago Yacht Club families. When possible, skippers and crews will be housed together. Housing assignments will be sent to the sailors before the event. We do our best to accommodate any requests for particular hosts/guests and allergy considerations. Meals are provided by the Chicago Yacht Club and are included in the fee.
After five years running the clinic in Club 420s, we are adding Lasers this year. All Laser sailors need to bring their own boat and all associated gear. The 420s are chartered from CYC for a $100 charter fee per boat. In addition, each chartering skipper/crew pair should bring a $250 damage deposit check made out to Chicago Yacht Club. If you prefer to bring your own 420, please let us know on your application. The boats provided are in top racing condition and are all less than four years old. Boats will be assigned to the sailors upon arrival. Sailors are expected to bring their own sails, bridle, spinnaker pole, and any personal sailing gear. Sailors may also bring any sheets and tuning equipment that they prefer to use.
For those arriving by air, we will arrange ground transportation service within specified arrival/departure times (there is a $60 round trip fee). You may fly into either of Chicago’s airports. Host families or other local volunteers will provide daily transportation to and from the clinic.
Our evening activities include dinner, and range from casual dinner with the coaches to speakers and additional on-the-water activities. Previous speakers have included world-renowned sailors such as Buddy Melges, Bora Gulari, and Ken Read. The details of the 2016 program have not been finalized, but you can expect a tie-in with the America’s Cup World Series taking place in Chicago immediately after the Neill Clinic.
The price is $675 per sailor, and includes food, housing, clinic gear, and evening events and activities. In addition, each skipper/crew pair should bring a $250 check made out to Chicago Yacht Club for the boat security deposit. Additional fees: Boat Charter Fee $100, Round trip transfers between airports (Midway or O’Hare) $60 per person. Fees will be collected once selections are made.
